Congenital Heart Disease

1. How does the heart function?

It is a beating muscle that pumps blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the body via the circulatory system. It has 4 chambers used to collect and redistribute blood to the body.

2. What diseases/conditions usually compromise the blood vessels ability to deliver blood which increases the workload of the heart?

coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, narrowed or clogged arteries

3. Any of the answers in Q#2 can lead to enlarged heart with compromised function.

4. Explain how congestive heart failure occurs?

Eventually the failing heart cannot pump out the amount of blood that is being delivered to it. This causes pressure to build within the heart chambers and venous system resulting in an accumulation of fluids and body tissues. This condition worsens over time.

5. What are the effects of congestive heart failure?

Swelling or edema occur in the legs and feet. Fluids may also collect in the lungs causing shortness of breath. Eventually heart failure may affect functioning of the kidneys further increasing fluid accumulation in the body and causing additional work for the failing heart. All of this reduces life expectancy.

How did you score today? Do not forget to come back in awhile for today's quiz!
