Understanding the signs of infertility in men.

Infertility is not always a female problem. 30% of the cases of infertility are due to male infertility. In general, the male fertility process involves the production of healthy and mature sperm and getting the sperm reach and fertilize an egg. Some men become infertile mainly because of abnormalities and defects in the male reproductive system.

The main physical symptom of male infertility is the inability to get their partner pregnant.
Experiencing infertility can bring on a range of painful emotions in one or both members of the couple. In general, having at least one child already tends to soften these painful emotions.

Here are some of the common signs and causes of male infertility:

Low sperm count – It is a major cause of male infertility. The normal range of sperm count is between 35 and 200 million sperm per milliliter of semen. An infertile man may have lower than the average number or even none of it. There are no visible symptoms for this problem and most affected men will not know about it until tests have been carried out.

Abnormal Sperm - Some men have sperm that are not properly formed. The abnormally shaped sperm have difficulty in fertilizing an egg. Another type of abnormal sperm is sperm with low mobility, which means that the sperm cannot travel fast or agile enough to reach the egg.

Exposing the testes to high temperatures – This can affect the ability of the sperm to move and fertilize an egg. For instance, men with cryptorchism have testicles that do not descent into the scrotum. That means the testes are still inside the body cavity, which has a higher temperature than the external scrotum.

Men who wear tight underwear and pants also expose their testes to high temperatures. Another condition that raises the temperature in the testes is varicocele, or enlarged veins, in the scrotum.

Blocked sperm ducts – This condition is also to blame for male infertility. A small number of men have vas deferens or sperm ducts that are blocked or damaged. This prevents the sperm from reaching the partner’s egg. Blocked sperm ducts can be a result of an infection such as mumps, injury to the testicles, congenital defects or a vasectomy.

Treatments addressing male infertility include
• Non-surgical/ Medication Therapy
• Spinal Cord Injury Treatments
• Electroejaculation therapy (EEJ)
• Hormone deficiency treatments
• Clomiphene citrate (Clomid, Serophene) for the infertile male
• Surgical Therapy
• Varicocele ligation
• Sperm Retrieval Techniques (MESA, PESA, TESE)
• Vasectomy Reversal
• Transurethral Resection of Ejaculatory Duct

If these treatments don't work, other means of fertilization may be considered, such as artificial insemination, which involves placing sperm directly in the cervix or uterus; Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, which involves placing individual sperm cells directly inside the woman's eggs; and In vitro fertilization, which involves fertilizing the egg outside the womb and then returning it to the uterus.

Stay healthy.

  8. Smoking constricts the blood vessels connected to our hearts. Doctors say that smoking can do the same for blood vessels in the penis. A few studies have conclusively demonstrated that smoking reduces penis elasticity and can, over a period of time, reduce the erect penis’s size by as much as a centimeter. This can be one of the reason why infertility strikes.
