Understanding the limit to exercise.

This basically depends on your current level of fitness and what your goals are.

Government guidelines recommend that the average healthy individual does 30 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise 3-5 times per week.

Are you a beginner?

If you are new to exercise or haven't exercised for a while, it is advisable to follow each exercise day with a rest day to allow your body to rest and repair.

Are you an intermediate?

If you are used to exercise and wish to exercise on consecutive days, try alternating between different forms of exercise i.e. cycling on Wednesday and swimming on Thursday.

Give your body a listen and increase your activity levels gradually.

Calculate your maximum heart rate (MHR).

To calculate your MHR, subtract your age from 220.
To find 65% of your MHR, multiply your MHR by 0.65.

i.e. if you are 35 years old, your MHR is 185.
65% of your MHR is 120.25 beats per minute.

Challenging your fitness level is very important. Too little work may have little effect on your body, therefore causing you to waste your time. For each type of exercise, there is a maximum level of force that your body produces. Your current fitness level determines the amount of force you can produce. The overload principle encompasses each of the principle listed. Ultimately, overload means to work harder. Whether you are a beginner or expert, you should always try to work harder than your normal comfort zone. When this occurs, you will be increasing your frequency, duration, intensity and progression.

Note: As always, consult with your health-care provider before beginning any fitness program.
